I would suggest to use the IMA Mineral Symbols for all images created after the publication of Warr (2021). It makes the interpretation of such images much easier, even without the description being visible (like here on Mindat). In this case hessite would be marked with "Hes" and not "He", and chalcopyrite would be "Ccp" and not "Cp".

IMA–CNMNC approved mineral symbols Laurence N. Warr* Institute of Geography and Geology, University of Greifswald, 17487 Greifswald, Germany Abstract Several text symbol lists for common rock-forming minerals have been published over the last 40 years, but no internationally agreed standard has yet been established.

Agate is the official state mineral, as designated by Public Chapter 30 of the 106th General Assembly in 2009. Agate, a semiprecious gemstone, is a waxy, cryptocrystalline variety of mineral quartz in which the colors are present in bands, clouds, or distinct groups. On March 5, 1969, the General Assembly, in adopting House Joint Resolution 42 ...

This list is a compilation heavily inspired by the original listing of Kretz (1983); it incorporates selected symbols from the listing of Spear (1993), and includes symbols used by authors of papers published in The Canadian Mineralogist. Note that the list contains only those mineral names that are sanctioned by the International …

Manganese. Manganese (element #25, symbol Mn) is a gray-white metal with a pinkish tinge, and is very brittle, but hard. It was discovered 1774 by Johann Gahn. Manganese easily reacts with water and air. On Earth, manganese is never found as a free metal, but it is found in a number of minerals. The most important of these minerals is ...

Molybdenum. Molybdenum (element #42, symbol Mo) is a metallic, lead-gray element, with a high melting point (4,730 degrees Fahrenheit). This is 2,000 degrees higher than the melting point of steel, and 1,000 degrees higher than the melting temperature of most rocks. Molybdenum was discovered by Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1778, and was isolated and ...

Colorado's State Mineral is the deep red Rhodochrosite. The Colorado State Archives tells us that "On April 17, 2002, Colorado Governor Bill Owens signed a bill passed by the General Assembly designating the Rhodochrosite as the new state mineral. Iron, which is the chief constituent of Earth's core, is the most abundant element in Earth as a whole (about 35 percent) and is relatively plentiful in the Sun and other stars. In the crust the free metal is rare, occurring as terrestrial iron (alloyed with 2–3 percent nickel) in basaltic rocks in Greenland and carbonaceous sediments in ...

Abstract. There is at present a disturbing lack of uniformity in the choice of symbols for rock-forming minerals. For example, in Volume 65 (1980) of The American Mineralogist, all of BT, BIO, and Biot are used for biotite, and all of Q, QTZ, Qtz, Qz and qtz are used for quartz. At least 10 other minerals are referred to by two or more symbols ...

There are several thousand known mineral species, about 100 of which constitute the major mineral components of rocks; these are the so-called rock-forming …
